cutter is a very lightweight class that does truncate html while keeping the original formatting, which is what it's supposed to do. The length of the shortened text is customizable and cutter doesn't cut off text in the middle of a word but instead after whole words only. The only flaw that I came across (and that can be seen in the demonstration coming with the package) is that the word count doesn't match. In the example file, the 36 words button cuts the text off after 33 words, while the 100 words button cuts off the text after 89 words.

Hi.
There is an updated version of this package in https://github.com/tcorral/Cutter.js/ please use it from there, and if the issue is still there please don't be afraid of creating an issue to fix it.
Kind Regards.
